A television station in Georgia triggered a panic when it broadcast a mock half-hour report about a Russian invasion of the country.

Emotions are still raw in many parts of Georgia after Russian tanks, troops and armored vehicles advanced into the former Soviet Republic in August 2008.

That invasion was triggered after Georgian troops attacked pro-Russian separatists in the breakaway republic of South Ossetia. In the fighting that ensued, each side offered conflicting figures on how many people died.

On Saturday night, the pro-government Imedi TV in Georgia broadcast what it called a “simulation” of what a fresh invasion would look like. And the broadcast ended with a note that the events in it were not real.

However, the show did not run any on-screen notes during the half-hour broadcast to alert viewers that what they were watching was not real. Consequently many were alarmed.

The show used archives sound bites from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, as well as footage of Georgians fleeing the 2008 conflict.

Investigators with Toyota Motor Corp. and the federal government could not replicate the runaway speeding reported by a Prius owner who said his car’s accelerator stuck as he drove on a California freeway, according to a memo for a congressional panel.

The memo, obtained Saturday by The Associated Press, said the experts who examined and test drove the car could not replicate the sudden, unintended acceleration James Sikes said he encountered. A backup mechanism that shuts off the engine when the brake and gas pedals are floored also worked properly during tests.
Yahoo! BuzzSikes, 61, called 911 on Monday to report losing control of his 2008 Prius as the hybrid reached speeds of 94 mph. A California Highway Patrol officer helped Sikes bring the vehicle to a safe stop on Interstate 8 near San Diego.

Fears of flooding from recent record snowfalls eased in the wake of the weekend storm over much of the Northeast as waters crested at lower-than-expected levels.

The biggest disruptions from the storm, which moved across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut with gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, were from power outages and travel delays.

On Sunday, more than 500,000 people in the region were waiting for power to be restored. Passengers on New Jersey Transit had been stranded for up to seven hours, because of power-supply problems. Air travelers endured lengthy delays at New York area airports.

Near downtown Pittsburgh, where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River, waters were expected to crest at 23 feet, which is well above its normal level of about 16 feet, but below the 25-foot flood stage.

Last week, the mayor declared a state of emergency in anticipation of major flooding after officials from the National Weather Service predicated the city’s three rivers, could rise to 27 feet or higher, depending on the force of the weekend storm.

“We kind of dodged a bullet,” said Bill Drzal, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service. He said heavy rains fell about 75 miles south of what had been forecast, keeping it from flowing to the Pittsburgh region, and that snow melt was more gradual than anticipated.

In New York state and across parts of New England, there was minor to moderate flooding. In parts of Iowa, Missouri and Illinois, 80% of the rivers were experiencing some flooding, but officials said the seasonal flooding remained relatively mild.

The fight wasn’t close, and it was never in doubt. Mayweather is fighting Shane Mosley on May 1, and the earliest the two could get together would be in the fall and only if Mayweather backs off his demands for blood testing.
